Mats form fastest in a few predictable spots — catching them early keeps your dog comfortable and your groom stress-free.
Mats form fastest behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar, and anywhere a harness or coat rubs the fur. Friction and moisture are the two biggest culprits, which is why mats tend to appear after a swim, a rainy walk, or a long stretch between grooms.
Check those spots weekly with your fingers. If you can feel a tight, dense knot, it's time to address it. Never bathe a matted dog before detangling — water tightens mats and can make them much harder to remove.
Severe matting is uncomfortable and can pull on the skin, so it's kindest to let us know before your appointment. We'll assess the coat and talk through the best approach, which sometimes means a shorter haircut for your dog's comfort and safety.
